Background

Three hundered years ago, in a time when women were expected to be housewives and good mothers, and men were brave and strong, Mai Bhago emerged as a God-inspired leader. Through her faithful courage and strong-minded independence, we could say that Mai Bhago Ji was demonstrating true girl power hundreds of years before the modern feminist movement. However, she was beyond male or female - she had a pure heart and mind. Only her actions mattered to God, not her gender. God's Supreme Light shone brightly in her and made her stand up where the 40 Men had betrayed the Guru. She was a Khalsa Woman.Guru Gobind Singh called an enlightened God-conscious being a "Khalsa". To the Guru there was no difference between himself and the Khalsa. It didn't matter if a person was male or female, black or white, being truthful on the inside and truthful in your deeds was all that was required to be a Khalsa. The Guru and the Khalsa were both permeated with the full blown Supreme Light of God. It was the same God inside the Guru and the Khalsa. The Khalsa were the army of God, created with joy by the Immortal and Timeless Being. Their sole purpose was to destroy the oppressors and to protect the saints and the poor of all religions. Mai bhago became one of the Guru's 10 closest Khalsas. She is a role model for all women and men, to live a pure life and to let God work through you for serving Truth in this world.
